# Are Students Spending Too Much Time on Screens? What the Latest Research Says

Ask teachers about technology in the classroom and one concern comes up again and again: **students spend too much time looking at screens.**

In McGraw Hill's 2026 global survey of more than 1,300 educators, excessive screen time was ranked as the **biggest obstacle to student success worldwide**. And 42% of educators said students' ability to focus had declined compared with five years ago.

Governments are responding too. By March 2026, **114 education systems — representing 58% of countries worldwide — had national policies banning smartphones in schools**, according to UNESCO.

It sounds like a simple story: more screens, worse learning.

But recent research suggests something more complicated.

A major 2025 European review puts it particularly well: when it comes to educational outcomes, we need to look at the **quality of screen time, not only the quantity**.

So perhaps “How much screen time is too much?” isn't quite the right question.

## The short version

Here's what recent research suggests.

## 1\. More screen time is associated with slightly worse academic performance

A 2025 meta-analysis brought together **63 studies involving 124,166 students from 28 countries**.

It looked at smartphone use, social media and video games in relation to academic performance.

The overall association was negative.

But here's an important detail: **it was small**.

That matters because it's easy to turn a statistically significant result into a dramatic headline.

“Smartphones hurt grades” sounds much more decisive than what the research actually tells us.

The study does suggest that heavier use of these technologies is associated with poorer academic outcomes. But it doesn't suggest that every additional minute looking at a screen causes a corresponding decline in learning.

And because much of this evidence is correlational, causation is difficult to untangle.

Do smartphones contribute to poorer academic performance?

Or do students who are already struggling academically tend to use them differently?

Or are other factors affecting both?

Probably some combination of all three.

## 2\. Not all screen time is the same

This is probably the biggest problem with the phrase **screen time**.

Imagine two students each spend an hour on a laptop.

One is watching short entertainment videos.

The other is researching a historical event, collaborating on a presentation and writing an explanation of what they found.

Technically, both accumulated one hour of screen time.

Educationally, they're clearly not equivalent.

A 2025 report commissioned through the European Commission's NESET network reviewed research on screen use and educational outcomes and concluded that the relationship is **complex and multifaceted**.

One of its clearest findings is that **purpose matters**.

Educational screen use tends to be associated with better academic outcomes than passive entertainment use.

That doesn't mean putting “educational” on an app magically makes screen time beneficial.

It means counting minutes alone throws away a lot of important information.

## 3\. Very high screen use is more concerning

Saying that context matters doesn't mean quantity is irrelevant.

The NESET review found that research generally associates **more than two to three hours of daily screen exposure** with worse outcomes across learning, academic performance and mental health.

Moderate use tends to show much smaller negative effects.

There isn't necessarily a magical line at two hours and one minute.

But there is an important distinction between a student using a device intentionally for part of the day and a student whose waking hours are dominated by screens.

So “all screen time is bad” isn't particularly useful.

But neither is “screen time doesn't matter as long as the content is good.”

At some point, quantity matters too.

## 4\. What screens replace matters

There are only so many hours in a day.

If additional screen time replaces nothing important, its effect may be small.

If it replaces sleep, exercise, reading, outdoor activity or interaction with other people, the calculation changes.

The NESET review highlights several possible pathways connecting excessive screen use with poorer educational outcomes, including **sleep loss, changes in executive functioning and reduced psychological well-being**.

This gives us another way to think about the problem.

Instead of asking:

**How many hours was this student on a screen?**

We might also ask:

**What wasn't the student doing during those hours?**

That's a much harder number to put into a screen-time dashboard.

It may also be more meaningful.

## 5\. Age and circumstances matter too

A five-year-old, a twelve-year-old and a university student don't have the same relationship with technology.

The European review found different patterns at different ages.

For very young children, excessive exposure is particularly concerning because interaction with parents and caregivers is such an important part of early learning.

Among school-age children and adolescents, the picture becomes more mixed. Educational use can be beneficial, while prolonged or passive use is more consistently associated with negative outcomes.

Socioeconomic circumstances matter as well.

The report notes that children from disadvantaged backgrounds can experience greater negative effects from screen use while benefiting less from educational screen use.

That's an important complication.

Giving every child access to a device doesn't automatically make the educational impact of that device equal.

## 6\. Schools are restricting phones, but teachers don't necessarily want technology gone

Perhaps the clearest sign of changing attitudes is what's happening with smartphones.

According to UNESCO, the percentage of countries with national school smartphone bans has risen dramatically:

**24% in 2023.**

**40% by early 2025.**

**58% by March 2026.**

That's an extraordinary policy shift in less than three years.

But something interesting appears when you ask teachers what they actually want.

McGraw Hill's 2026 survey found widespread support for **restrictions**, but much less enthusiasm for removing phones from school entirely.

Popular approaches included allowing phones outside lessons, requiring them to be stored during class, or permitting their use when a teacher specifically wants them for an instructional activity.

In other words:

**The emerging position may not be “get rid of technology.”**

It's closer to:

**Technology should be there when there's a reason for it to be there.**

## Maybe “screen time” is the wrong metric

None of this means concerns about screens are misplaced.

Teachers are reporting problems with attention. Heavy recreational use is associated with poorer academic outcomes. Excessive screen exposure can interfere with sleep and other activities students need. And governments clearly believe classroom smartphone distraction has become serious enough to act.

But **screen time combines too many different things into one number**.

Reading an article isn't TikTok.

Writing isn't gaming.

Video-calling classmates isn't scrolling alone.

Completing an interactive mathematics exercise isn't watching autoplay videos for two hours.

They're all screen time.

That doesn't make them educationally equivalent.

Perhaps a better set of questions for schools and teachers is:

**Why is the screen being used?**

**What is the student doing while using it?**

**What would they otherwise be doing?**

**And does the screen make this particular learning activity better?**

If there's no good answer to that last question, turning it off may indeed be the best educational technology decision available.
