If you remember Napster, you probably remember music downloads.

Now the same brand is trying something very different:

**AI versions of teachers.**

Napster has partnered with GEMS Education in Dubai to develop what it calls digital personas or “digital twins” of teachers.

These AI versions would be built around a teacher’s own subject knowledge, course material and approved content.

The idea is not to replace the teacher.

It is to make some of that teacher’s expertise available to students outside school hours.

## What would a digital teacher actually do?

According to Napster and GEMS, the system could give students:

- 24/7 access to teacher-informed explanations
- support in multiple languages
- help with course material outside school hours
- personalized learning guidance

The first phase will also explore:

- gamified learning
- AI-assisted content creation
- classroom simulations
- digitalized instructors

The project will begin at the GEMS School of Research and Innovation in Dubai.

A working solution is targeted before the end of 2026.

## The strange part is that this is not really a chatbot

At least, that is not how the companies are positioning it.

Instead of giving every student the same generic AI assistant, the system would be built around a particular teacher’s knowledge and materials.

That creates a very different idea:

**What if the teacher’s expertise could stay available after the lesson ends?**

A student stuck on homework at 8 PM could ask the digital version of their teacher for help.

The answer would, in theory, come from approved material rather than from a completely general model.

That is potentially useful.

It is also slightly unsettling.

## Who is the “teacher” in that conversation?

This is where the idea gets interesting.

A real teacher knows the student.

They remember what happened in yesterday’s lesson.

They notice hesitation.

They understand classroom dynamics.

They can decide not to answer a question directly because the student needs to think first.

A digital twin may know the teacher’s material.

That is not the same as knowing the learner.

Napster and GEMS say the technology is designed to **extend the reach of teachers, not replace them**, and that humans will remain able to supervise and intervene.

That distinction will matter.

## The privacy question is unavoidable

The idea also raises obvious questions.

How much teacher material is needed to build a convincing digital persona?

Who owns that digital version?

What happens if a teacher leaves the school?

Can the system continue using their voice, style or expertise?

What student data does the system collect?

GEMS says safeguards, safety protocols and human oversight will be built into the development process.

Those details may end up being more important than how realistic the avatar looks.

## The bigger idea is not as strange as it sounds

Schools already use recordings, learning platforms, FAQ pages, revision videos and AI tutors to extend learning beyond the classroom.

A digital teacher twin is essentially the next step:

**turn the teacher’s expertise into an interactive service.**

Whether students actually want that is another question.

The technology may be useful if it helps students get better support when a teacher is unavailable.

It may be much less useful if it simply becomes another chatbot wearing a familiar face.

That is what makes this experiment worth watching.

Napster once changed how people accessed music.

Now it wants to change how students access teachers.

That is a sentence nobody expected to write in 2026.
